“Cretaceous Diatom Database: A tool for investigating early diatom evolution"

In this article we present first comprehensive database of the Cretaceous Diatoms. We combined two views: palaeontology and phylogenetic. First and foremost we carefully selected well documented diatom species that can be used in molecular clock studies to estimates the origin time of the diatom lineage. Further we analysed Cretaceous taxonomy and outlined areas that need further investigation in the form of descriptions and reclassifications. Lastly, we showed that Cretaceous diatoms are way more diverse than previously estimated. Results of this study will undoubtedly progress many branches of diatom research.
